2. Gout

Gout is a common cause of sudden joint pain. It is a type of arthritis that usually affects one joint at a time, often your big toe. You may also feel pain in your ankle, knee, wrist, or elbow. The pain often starts quickly, sometimes at night.

3. Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a long-term condition that causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. It affects some people who have psoriasis, a skin condition that leads to red, scaly patches. In many cases, skin changes appear before joint symptoms, but joint pain can sometimes develop first.
You may notice pain in only a few joints, such as your fingers or toes. The joints near the tips of your fingers can feel tender and swollen. Symptoms may affect one side of your body or both. This condition can also involve your spine, which may cause lower back stiffness that feels worse in the morning and improves with movement.
Other signs include swelling of an entire finger or toe, small dents in your nails, and pain where tendons attach to bone, such as at the heel. 4. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term autoimmune disease that causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Your immune system attacks the lining of your joints by mistake. This response leads to ongoing inflammation that can damage joint tissue over time and affect how your joints move.
You often notice symptoms first in the small joints of your hands, wrists, and feet. The disease usually affects both sides of your body at the same time. If one wrist becomes swollen and painful, the other wrist may also develop similar symptoms.
Common symptoms include joint pain and tenderness, swelling and warmth, morning stiffness that lasts more than one hour, fatigue, low energy, and mild fever. Morning stiffness is a key sign and may limit movement for a long period after waking. Rheumatoid arthritis can also involve your eyes, lungs, skin, or heart, and firm nodules may form under your skin. 5. Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that spreads through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. It often begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue. Many people develop a round, expanding rash at the bite site, which can be an early sign of infection.
If treatment does not begin early, the infection can spread to the joints and lead to Lyme arthritis. This condition often causes visible swelling in one or a few joints, most commonly the knee. Preventive steps include wearing long sleeves and pants in wooded areas, using insect repellent, checking the skin after outdoor activity, and seeking early medical care to reduce the risk of joint complications.
6. Lupus

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease that can cause joint pain and swelling. When you have lupus, your immune system attacks healthy tissues by mistake. This immune response leads to inflammation in your joints and can also affect other organs and body systems.
You may feel pain, stiffness, or swelling in your fingers, hands, wrists, or knees. The discomfort can come and go. Some days your joints may feel normal, while other days they may feel sore and stiff. Morning stiffness is common and may limit movement early in the day.
Lupus often affects more than your joints. You might notice extreme tiredness, skin rashes, fever, hair loss, or chest pain with deep breathing. 7. Hypothyroidism

You may notice joint pain, stiffness, or swelling, especially in your hands and knees. The discomfort often feels dull and steady. Some people also report muscle aches and weakness, which can add to joint discomfort and limit daily movement.
Other common signs include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, thinning hair, feeling cold more easily, and a slower heart rate. Women may experience heavy or irregular menstrual periods. Causes include autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroid inflammation, surgery, radiation therapy, and certain medicines. Treatment usually involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which often leads to improvement in joint and muscle symptoms as hormone levels return to a healthy range.
8. Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain in your muscles and joints. The discomfort can affect your arms, legs, back, chest, and neck. You may feel aching, burning, or throbbing sensations that last for months or longer and vary in intensity from day to day.
This condition does not damage your joints, but it can make them feel very tender. Even light pressure on certain areas may hurt. Many people report ongoing fatigue, even after a full night of sleep. The pain and tiredness can interfere with daily tasks and concentration.
Other symptoms include trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, problems with focus and memory often called “fibro fog,” numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, and anxiety or low mood. Research suggests that your brain and nerves process pain signals more intensely than usual. Treatment often involves regular exercise, stress management, improved sleep habits, and certain antidepressant or anti-seizure medications that help calm pain signals.
9. Injury

An injury is a common cause of joint pain. You can hurt a joint during sports, exercise, work activities, or a fall. Pain may begin right away or develop over several hours. The level of discomfort depends on the type of injury and the joint involved.
Sprains and strains often affect joints. A sprain stretches or tears ligaments, which connect bones to each other. A strain affects muscles or tendons, which connect muscle to bone. More serious injuries include dislocations, when a bone slips out of place, and fractures, which are breaks in the bone near or inside the joint.
Joint injuries may cause swelling, warmth, bruising, weakness, instability, and pain with movement. Overuse from repeated motions such as running or lifting can also irritate joint tissues and lead to stiffness. Mild injuries often improve with rest and limited movement. Pain relievers such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce discomfort. Severe injuries sometimes require medical care, imaging tests, physical therapy, or surgery to restore joint function.
10. Hemarthrosis
Hemarthrosis happens when blood collects inside your joint. This buildup leads to pain, swelling, and stiffness. It most often affects your knee, but it can also occur in your ankle, elbow, or shoulder. The joint space fills with blood, which increases pressure and limits normal movement.
You may notice sudden swelling after an injury such as a fall or sports impact. The joint can feel warm, tight, and difficult to move. The skin around the area may appear bruised. Causes include direct injury, torn ligaments, fractures, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, or complications after joint surgery.
If you have a bleeding disorder, even a minor injury can trigger joint bleeding. Repeated bleeding in the same joint can damage cartilage and increase the risk of early arthritis. Diagnosis may involve imaging tests or removal of joint fluid for testing. Treatment depends on the cause and may include rest, ice, joint support, clotting factor therapy, or removal of blood from the joint to relieve pressure. Physical therapy may help restore movement after swelling decreases.
11. Septic Arthritis
Septic arthritis is a joint infection most often caused by bacteria, though viruses or fungi can also be responsible. Germs usually travel through your bloodstream from another part of your body, but they can also enter through an injury or surgery. The infection spreads quickly inside the joint space.
You will often feel intense pain in one joint, most commonly your knee or hip. The joint may appear red, feel warm, and swell rapidly. Fever and a general feeling of illness are common. Children may refuse to move the affected limb, especially when the hip is involved.
This condition is a medical emergency because infection can quickly damage cartilage and bone. Treatment requires prompt antibiotics given by mouth or through a vein. Doctors often remove infected fluid from the joint with a needle, and in some cases require surgery to clean the joint space. Early treatment lowers the risk of permanent joint damage.
12. Viral Arthritis

Viral arthritis happens when a virus causes swelling and irritation in your joints. You may feel joint pain, stiffness, and visible swelling. These symptoms often begin during or soon after a viral illness. Joint inflammation is linked to your body’s immune response to the infection.
Several viruses can trigger this condition, including hepatitis B and C, HIV, parvovirus, rubella, mumps, chikungunya, Zika, and some common stomach or respiratory viruses. Not everyone with these infections develops joint symptoms. When symptoms appear, they may affect one joint or several at the same time.
The joints in your hands, wrists, knees, or ankles are often involved. Diagnosis is usually based on your symptoms and recent illness, and blood tests may help confirm a viral cause. Treatment focuses on symptom relief while your body clears the virus. Pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicines may be recommended. Most cases improve within days to weeks.
13. Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a long-term type of arthritis that mainly affects your spine. It causes inflammation in the joints between the bones of your spine and where your spine meets your pelvis. This inflammation leads to ongoing back pain and stiffness that can affect daily movement.
You may feel dull pain in your lower back or hips. The pain often feels worse at night or after long periods of sitting. Morning stiffness is common and usually improves with activity. Over time, the bones of your spine can fuse together, which may limit bending and twisting and change your posture.

14. Reactive Arthritis
Reactive arthritis is joint pain and swelling that begins after an infection, often in your stomach, intestines, or urinary tract. Joint symptoms usually appear one to four weeks after the illness. Your immune system reacts to the infection and mistakenly targets your joints, which leads to inflammation.
It most often affects your knees, ankles, and feet, but it can also involve your hands, lower back, or heels. Symptoms may include red or irritated eyes, pain or burning during urination, skin rashes on your palms or soles, mouth sores, and fatigue. Some people have mild discomfort, while others develop more intense swelling in one or several joints.
Diagnosis is based on your symptoms, a physical exam, and lab tests of blood, urine, or joint fluid. Imaging tests such as X-rays or MRI scans may help exclude other causes. Treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroids may be used, and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs are considered if symptoms persist.
15. Depression

Depression affects more than your mood. It can increase how strongly you feel physical pain, including joint pain. When you are depressed, your body becomes more sensitive to discomfort, so small aches may seem more intense than usual.
Chronic pain and depression often occur together. Ongoing joint pain can lower your energy, disrupt sleep, and limit daily activities. Over time, this strain can contribute to depression. In turn, depression can make joint pain feel worse and more difficult to cope with.
Other symptoms may include low mood most of the day, loss of interest in favorite activities, fatigue, sleep problems, appetite changes, and trouble focusing. Depression can also reduce your activity level, which may lead to stiff joints and weaker muscles. Treatment options include counseling, lifestyle changes, and antidepressant medication. Addressing depression may also help reduce the intensity of joint pain.
